Set in a pre-World War II Europe, French and German spies are locked in a life-or-death struggle on the espionage battlefields. French Lt. Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier gets drawn into a world of betrayal, intrigue and passion in this spy…

This is a British weekly story film series. Very well done. Intrigue, murder, espionage in the UK during WW 2.

This is a good movie but the suspenseful music is too loud. Also if you want to put closed caption on the movie, it is hard to determine if it is really done before the movie starts. Setup just shows ON Off there is a red…

David Tennant is a strong actor, have like everything I've seen him in until this. The story is told in a mechanical, episodic way that does not draw you in.

Hard to follow who on whose side for a while, but typical for spy movie. I like actors, like setting, like 3 hours. Bit mushy.

I couldn't watch more than 30 minutes...too long (3hrs), hard to hear & you don't know whose on your side for too long (according to a review below it begins to make sense in part 2). Very poorly done for a BBC production.

A brief summary of the Furst novel. Entertaining but not realistic fiction of pre-war Warsaw and Paris with many of their foreigners. The dreadful future lingers in the mind.

slow moving and a little more political than I like. Also, it is 180 minutes.

Interesting period war/spy drama when the intelligence agents from various powers, particularly French, Polish, German and Russian, were working to decipher each other right up to the start of WW II in Warsaw. The long set up was an…

I really enjoyed this film. I enjoyed the story, it was a bit confusing in the beginning trying to figure out who was who and who's side they were on, but it evened out before the second half. Good acting, interesting plot. Did not feel…

Enjoyment of this adaptation is limited strictly to the 'look' -- the vintage cars and locomotives, the uniforms and evening dress, the foggy cobbled streets (which appear to have been polished for the occasion), and so on. There are some…

Great look at Hitler/the Nazis from the view of Europe at the lead-up of WW2. David Tennant is a great actor, as always, and had a great supporting cast.

Very good production of the Alan Furst novel. Furst is a master of the spy genre. It is a messy, dirty, complicated and tragic business and it shows in this production. Well done all around.

I read the book and have now seen the movie. Both are worthwhile expositions of what I think of when I want to know Europe leading up to WWll.

Low key, realistic espionage, not an English spymaster running French spies this time, but a French spymaster running Polish spies. Considering that we know what happened to France and Poland in WW II, there is a surprising amount of…
