Curtis was known for richness and depth of his photos. The photo reproduction in this book is barely up to photocopy quality. All the highlights are completely blown out and the shadows are very weak. Find another book about Curtis to get the true experience of his photos.

Edward S. Curtis, the "Shadow Catcher," was a documentarian, best known for his photographs of Native Americans in the early 20th century. His life and works have received considerable attention in recent years; in part, due to the well-received biography by Timothy Egan. I picked this book off the library shelf because it is much shorter than Mr. Egan's, but looked like a well-produced and interesting read. Indeed, the book is written in a direct, informative, uncluttered style. I don't know if Ms. Lawlor's book and Mr. Egan's book are generally consistent about factual matters, but hers seems to have been developed in a conscientious manner.
