The usual suspects: Power, politics, greed, and religion. Not surprising these can account for the reasons why a book such as this can be written.
There is a lot of information in this book and at times the eyes may gloss over and other times there is surprising information that dispels commonly held beliefs.
At times the diagrams used to illustrate battle sites are not the best.
There are two quotes of note: 1. On page 358 about the battle of Verdun during WWI, "Soldiers were commodities to be used rather than lives to be lost...the term "death" was rarely used..instead it was "wastage"...the dehumanization of war. 2. Page 435, during Operation Desert Storm the author talks about the fear of Iraq acquiring nuclear military power. And he says, ..."Such weaponry in the hands of an unstable personality had to be curbed, whether in the Persian Gulf OR ANYWHERE ELSE." This book was published in 1999. In 2018, who are the unstable with nukes?

Marvelous short summaries (about 4 pages per battle) of a hundred military engagements, from the ancient Egyptian Empire, Battle of Megiddo to Desert Storm in 1991. After every entry references are cited & a 10 page bibliography. This is a fine basis for further study.
