5 stars.
The first time I saw this movie (about 25 years ago) I was surprised how clever the concept was, how intense the action built up, and how wonderful the performances were. At the end I said to myself, "Wow! That was really good!" I became a fan of classic noir and started to really appreciate their storytelling, choreography, lighting, and style I'm looking forward to seeing this one again.

The added attraction to this film noir classic? Unlike the putrid remake, the progressive (non)symptoms of Luminol poisoning are on the mark. In other words, medically and scientifically sound. Enjoy!

This 1950 film noir is perhaps the finest example of Hollywood noir ever produced. Edmund Obrien stars but he is a fattish, average looks guy, no special, except he in this role he owns every scene hands down. Luther Adler is aptly cast as the criminal looking to make a buck no matter what. Neville Brand is wonderful as the psychopath looking to hurt everyone he meets. Enjoy watching the film. Don't watch it once and don't watch it too often. There are no stars today that could equal this film.

Edmond O'Brien as accountant turned detective has more energy than the Energizer bunny -- running, and taking planes, trolleys, and automobiles all over California, in search of...??? Nasty Neville Brand makes a perfect 'Chester', too. Nice to see someone who really enjoys their work.

5 STARS. An incredibly taut, suspenseful film noir about a man caught up in a horrendous nightmare. And the film is only 83 minutes long!!!

Dr. MacDonald (after examining Frank, and finding luminous poisoning): "...Of course, I'll have to notify the police. This is a case for Homicide." Frank Bigelow: "Homicide?!?" Dr. MacDonald: "I don't think you fully understand, Bigelow. You've been murdered."

Police Lieutenant:
"Who was murdered?"

Bigelow: "I was."
