Excellent story and movie.

I saw this when it was first released and after that 5 times. It's one of the BEST inspirational movies of the 90's along with Saving Private Ryan.

Totally inspiring...what a great movie to watch with your kids (or anybody's kids!) to encourage them to follow their dreams. Excellent!

A Hollywood-ready but true story. There is the odd speechifying moment, but October Sky is finely directed and acted, and has an unselfconscious sense of period. There are not many movies that make me cry happy tears, but this is one. BONUS: not sure if this was intentional, but there are overtones between Jake Gyllenhaal and Laura Dern, who plays his passionately supportive teacher. Jakey was a big boy for his age.

Jake Gyllenhaal is a fine actor (see him in "Rendition") and this is an early film of his. Based on a fantastic and true story and set in the 1950s, it has a terrific sound track to match. Funny and charming with appealing characters. Yes, it is a bit sappy and hokey but so what? It's great entertainment.

October Sky – DVD – based on the book Rocket Boys – A Memoir by Homer H. Hickam Jr. The movie of course deviates somewhat from the book and while very entertaining, the book in many ways was better. Both are highly recommended by Senior Doctor-at-Bass! D. A.
