The four women at the center of The Enchanted April are alike only in their dissatisfaction with their everyday lives. They find each other--and the castle of their dreams--through a classified ad in a London newspaper one rainy February afternoon. The ladies expect a pleasant holiday, but they don't anticipate that the month they spend in Portofino will reintroduce them to their true natures and reacquaint them with joy.

Pure joy. Yes it is from that period and 'slow' by today's standards, but the emotions and quirky personalities are real, relevant and charming. The two unlikely friends remind me a little of the Sense and Sensibility sisters. And each woman is an illustration of how duty, personal choices, convention, and that era's women's roles create a cage (even gilded). It's lyrical and subtle and about taking a chance and opening oneself to change, hope and love. About transformations and finding understanding and friendships in unlikely places. Travel really does that for people - removed from the usual settings gives a freedom for new expression and thought. The reading of it is done very well in this edition.

Elizabeth von Arnim wrote Enchanted April in the grey days following World War 1. But from the first page, the story sparkles with joy and hope, even for the dreary, slightly absurd lives of its characters. Nadia May's reading is the bittersweet icing on the cake.
