It was the summer of her Chevette, of J.P. and letting her hair grow. It was also the summer when, without warning, popular high school student Kim Larsen disappeared from her small midwestern town. Her loving parents, her introverted sister, her friends and boyfriend must now do everything they can to find her. As desperate search parties give way to pleading television appearances, and private investigations yield to personal revelations, we see one town's intimate struggle to maintain hope and, finally, to live with the unknown.

A beautifully written book that drags in places, but does an excellent job of conveying the tragedy of families who lose children. The daughter in the novel, who is on the verge of university, disappears one night and the family and friends and boyfriends spend months coping with the mystery of her disappearance. I can't say more hear without spoiling the ending. Recommended for lovers of psychological fiction, mysteries, and true crime. The book is fiction, but it seems very real to life. Plenty of believable and heartbreaking details. Recommended.

Now every other book is about the missing teenagers and how that affects the whole family, and most of all, the younger siblings. Although it is a very sad story, the book is a chronicle of the search for the missing girl. Very slow, and, unfortunately, quite boring.

Excellent, well-written book with deep emotional appeal and well-rounded characters.

This terrific novel, which I read a few years ago when it first came out, involves the ever-popular plot device of a character's disappearance. Thanks to O'Nan's stellar use of dialogue--his unfailing ear for current speech patterns used by young people--as well as his uncanny suspense and elliptical yet right-on-target sentences, "Songs for the Missing" is unique. O'Nan's oeuvre tends to have its ups and downs. This book is one of his best. Unlike its young female character who goes missing, this book is not likely to disappear.
