Very quickly they begin a passionate affair, and Kate invites Gideon to fly to Europe so that they can continue their affair without her husband finding out. When he encounters Kate's friends in Stockholm, however, Gideon soon finds out that nothing in Kate's world is what it seems. At the home of the Swedish family with whom they are staying, all kinds of strange and terrifying events occur, including the appearance of the family's daughters in two places at once. Kate explains to him that his musical sensitivity gives him the ability to experience incidents that have happened in the past but whose resonance remains. Deeply disturbed, Gideon returns to Manhattan, but he can't stop thinking about Kate. With the guidance of an elderly woman upstairs, Pearl, who is able to sense the presence of ghosts, Gideon must work out who, and what, Kate really is, and what she wants from him .
