This came to an abrupt end when his mother died shortly before his ninth birthday and he was sent with his brother to a boarding school. He learned to escape into the world of literature as well as his own imagination, and eventually became a professor of literature at Oxford University. At Oxford, Lewis had a close group of friends, including J. R. R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Together, they would talk about literature, philosophy, and religion for many hours. An atheist since his teen years, Lewis struggled with religious belief. Eventually, he embraced Christianity at the age of forty, and began exploring his new faith through his writing. During World War II, the war-weary people of London received spiritual and moral support from Lewis during weekly radio broadcasts by the BBC. He published many well-known books, including The Chronicles of Narnia, a classic of children's literature. Book jacket.
