Dark and a bit unpleasant to think of any belief that is so all consuming. Playthings of the Gods indeed! What fools these mortals be and to what end? Maybe HAL the computer knows or perhaps the monolith. Scalzi is a great Sci-fi writer.

A novella with a sharp idea--humans follow a dominate god who has imprisoned all the other gods in the universe and made them spaceship engines.

Pretty grim stuff from a usually lighter author.

What to say? I loved the world Scalzi created and the first line is wonderful.

This is a world with many gods but only one god rules and the rest serve on the space ships of the planet Bishop’s Call. Captain Ean Tephe is a man of faith and that faith along with that of his crew will be sorely tested.

I wavered between 3 and 4 stars for this novella. But from the first chapter I knew what was going to happen, not the exact story but enough that the end was almost what I was expecting. Because I found the story predictable, I decided to stick with a 3 star but the story was enough that I will be trying one of Scalzi’s full length novels in the future.

Very non-Scalzi tone, but absolutely Scalzi pacing. The ending is one of his very best.

Wow, thoroughly enjoyable. A lovely dark read, not that bubbly pap that some pass as adult fiction.
Now if only to find more, this was satisfying consumed is such short order. What can be done for an encore?

The Lovecraft reference not only fits the sweet darkness of this story but also the brevity of this story, certainly not a LeCarre novella, it doesn't waste words here.

I look forward to more.
