Nazi-occupied Holland, 1945. In a snow-covered village, thirteen-year-old Michiel ... is drawn into the Resistance when he aids a wounded British paratrooper. Michiel's boyish sense of defiance and adventure soon turns to danger and desperation, as Michiel is forced to act without knowing whom to trust among the adults and townspeople around him. Wartime's harsh reality encroaches on childhood innocence as Michiel confronts good and evil, courage and duplicity, and his own burden of responsibility.

This film is not focused so much on battle during WWII but rather on the effects of the war on one family, particularly the brave young son of a mayor who is caught between the Germans and the citizens of his town. Great acting, writing as well as cinematography. A beautiful and touching film.

My take on this. A very different presentation of true events 1945 Netherlands, seen through the perception of a young boy. He is naive, protected & learning a hard lesson, not understanding the grit of war. I think I'd have like the book better. It might help some to have a basic grasp on WWII history & how it affected small Nazi occupied countries, the element of distrust & betrayal these people lived with. In the present day age of lightening fast news delivery for world events it's often difficult to realize how uninformed populations were in 1945.

I think it could have been better presented, but I did enjoy this view.

A very brave young man to evade the Nazis to help a downed British pilot. The large yellow captions was a big help.
Lots of surprises.

This is a 2008 Dutch war-time drama directed by Martin Koolhoven, based on the 1972 novel "Winter in Wartime" by Jan Terlouw.
In the film, the protagonist is a 13-year-old boy, but in the novel he is a 16-year-old Dutch boy who lives through the last winter of World War II.
The original story was based on the author's recollections when Jan Terlouw was eight years old when the German army invaded the Netherlands.
It is an anti-war story that tells you that you should NEVER start a war even though war movies might look glorious at times.

Wow! This was a powerful story of a young man in Nazi occupied Holland who is protecting a British flyer who had been shot down but had escaped the clutches of the Nazis. This has all the trappings of realistic struggles and tragedies combined with the pacing of a Hitchcock thriller. This was one of the best films I've seen in 2012.
