The Royal Stuarts brings to life figures like Mary, Queens of Scots, Charles I, and Bonnie Prince Charlie, uncovering a family of strong affections and fierce rivalries. Considering it's a history book, it was quite an easy read. I found I preferred to read each person in full or you lose track of all the 'characters'. About 3/4 of the way through, there was a lot of history to try to keep in mind (great great great grandfather did what?) so it started to be a bit difficult to keep track of but that was not really the fault of the author. Enjoyable read overall especially if you're interested particularly in the subject matter.

In The Royal Stuarts, "well-grounded and nimble" (Booklist) author Allan Massie dishes up an enthralling slice of history from 14th-century Scotland, when Robert II became the first Stewart (later spelled Stuart) king of Scotland, to the 18th century, when Queen Anne united England, Scotland, and Ireland. Novelist, journalist, and newspaper columnist Massie knows his history and how to keep readers hooked, combining vivid individual portraits of key figures and universal themes of dramatic interest (loyalty, lechery, power, and piety). Fans of Alison Weir's Tudor-centric histories may enjoy visiting the Stuart clan for a change of pace in this comprehensive and engaging account (complete with family trees) of their dynasty.
