Lucy tries hard (maybe a little too hard) to make friends in the forest and nearly misses an unlikely candidate - proving that friendship comes in all sizes, colors, and feathers.

SUMMARY: Lucille Bear has decided to make a new friend. She figures it will be easy. She tries one animal in the forest after another. But each time she is met with problems. First she doesn't understand how to play properly with some of the animals. Then she tries to be helpful and to fit in by doing what the other animals do, but Lucy either scares the animals or she doesn't feel comfortable. Next she tries to get pushy. Final she gets frustrated and sulks. When she least expects it, a perfect friend shows up.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in mixed media of pencil, construction paper and wood. You would think this style might feel static, but Brown does such a good job of showing action and facial expression, that you feel the movement and the emotion on each page. On a couple of pages in the beginning, there were too many word bubbles grouped together making them difficult to follow.

REVIEW: I laughed out loud at this book from the very beginning. I just knew from page one that Lucille was going to bumble her efforts at making friends (she thought it would be oh so simple) and sure enough she did. Her efforts were hilarious as she made one mistake after another. Even her pushiness was funny. I loved when she tried to calm herself down, but merely fell apart. Best of all, I loved when the perfect friend, who loves doing what Lucy does, came along.

Peter Brown is an expert funny-man, and You Will Be My Friend is no exception. Perfect for read alouds, as well as for children navigating the world of new friendships, Lucy is a relatable character who means well, and in the end is rewarded for being herself. Brown's ability to use humor with this often sensitive subject makes it a rare treat.

It can be hard to make friends! Not everyone likes the same things. Kids will empathize with the overenthusiastic protagonist, who has a lot of trouble in the friend-making department.Lots of fun, light treatment of a thorny topic. Kids will laugh.

If you try to hard to make a friend, you won't be able to, because friends find each other naturally. Lucy, is one determined bear though, and her attempts to make a bond with others makes this a very funny story. She tries to be like the other animals, going so far as to even dress like them, tries to talk to them, but clearly does not understand them, and ends up annoying others by not realizing she is being inconsiderate. Her cheerful and dedicated attitude is commendable though. The art style is full of life, with huge facial expressions, and a range of actions that make you laugh. The map mode is a clever touch that shows the start of her journey, and the end of the flamingos. If you enjoyed this book, try the authors other one, Children Make Terrible Pets, which is done in the same style.

Illustrations were cute but felt like something was missing from the story itself. Didn't find it that great overall
