This book is written primarily about romantic relationships, but I found it enormously helpful in understanding how my mother treated me throughout my lifetime (she died when I was 57). It really describes the more invisible forms of verbal abuse (such as discounting and withholding) as well as the more obvious. Emotional/verbal abuse of children by well-intentioned adults is really a norm in this society, and this book can be really useful in bringing this to light. A book that has helped me see what healthy parent-child relationships can be like is 'Listen: Five Simple Tools to Meet Your Everyday Parenting Challenges' by Patty Wipfler and Tosha Schore.

Only 25 pages in, I ordered a copy from Amazon because I was running out of post-it notes. This is the book I have been longing for for 35 years! Finally someone who believes me! I am going to photo copy about 5 pages and send them to all my friends who tell me I am crazy. All our previous counselors gave exactly the wrong advice and told me my husband was damaged so patience is required. This book tells me he CHOOSES to be this way and my sympathy and patience is his winning. A must read for any woman who has to interact with any man who makes her feel stupid, worthless, or just inadequate in some way.

I'm almost done reading this book and boy oh boy what an eye opener. Even though I left my verbally abusive husband years ago, the scars still remain. The positive thing is noticing whats happening and getting out of the relationship.
