Simply the best drawn anime made. This film is so beautiful that it is easy to overlook its shortcomings. The associated manga by Shinkai elaborates more on the characters and plot, however this movie nicely stands on its own and due to the emphasis on rain it really fits into the character of the Lower Mainland.

Beautiful in its mystery, this short film is amazing. I feel that this is the film to show to that friend who says they are not into anime. It is extremely moving.

great music, voice acting, lighting, character design. I didn't like the plot that much, yet still found it above decent.

Like what a lot of others are saying-it could've been longer!

The animation in itself walks along the realistic line to the point where it looks absolutely beautiful. It's an immersive experience.

The Garden of Words is a short animated movie that follows Takao, a young boy who is training to become a shoemaker. He skips school during rainy days to sketch shoes in a park, where he meets a woman who enjoys beer and chocolate. Soon, they both start to see each other again without scheduling the times, only to meet on rainy days. Their relationship opens up, but the end of the rainy season approaches. With no knowledge of the other person, they have no way to meet back up until it rains again. This romance movie views the life of Takao as he progresses through his high school years, encountering conflict along the way.

The main criticism that I have about this movie is the duration. As it is only 46 minutes long, not much backstory or development of characters can be made. This leads to a lot of confusion during the beginning of the story as the viewer is scrambling to make connections that the movie doesn’t discreetly make. The viewer must guess and assume many things about the characters as their details pass very quickly. Despite this, the movie makes up for this flaw in many different ways. First, one of the most vibrant and enjoyable parts of the movie was definitely the art and visuals. They are extremely vibrant, and can be seen right from the start of the movie. Next, the dialogue is very short and concise, but carries heavy meaning during the movie. Many of the words are important, and have a huge impact throughout the whole story. Lastly, the background music is very peaceful and seems to fit very well with the visuals and the tone of the movie. Overall, this movie is very well done, and I would recommend it to anyone.

The Garden of Words is one that is mysterious, in a sense that it is a garden of secrets. The movie contains many deep meanings that are somewhat hidden through the small scenes that occur in the movie. Though the length of the film is short, the tone of the movie is developed well, and is able to envelop the viewers in emotions brought by the movie. The visuals a main strong point of The Garden of Words, where rain drops in the setting are so visually appealing. The soundtrack is simple and ambient, but helps set the tone of the movie, and engross viewers. Overall, the movie is one that is worth a watch, with its form of simplicity, and encourages inferences to make the most of out it. If you liked Garden of Words, then you should also check out 5 Centimeters Per Second, one of Shinkai's most notable works.

As a background artist I found the film most beautifully executed. However, the dialogue is terrible, the story not engaging, The characters looked so flat and cartoonish against the lavish backgrounds, and there was so much unnecessary material and scenes that stole from any continuity. It could have been so much more - but then, there is only one master - Miyazake,

The visuals are unique in style, beautiful Japanese-style garden setting. The rain adds to it's beauty. The story, a simple one. The film is only 46 minutes but enough to keep you engaged.
