Greed, Power, and Endless War

"War corrupts. Endless war corrupts absolutely. Ever since 9/11 America has fought an endless war on terror, seeking enemies everywhere and never promising peace. In 'Pay any price,' James Risen reveals an extraordinary litany of the hidden costs of that war: from squandered and stolen dollars, to outrageous abuses of power, to wars on normalcy, decency, and truth. In the name of fighting terrorism, our government has done things every bit as shameful as its historic wartime abuses -- and until this book, it has worked very hard to cover them up. Lincoln suspended habeas corpus. FDR authorized the internment of thousands of Japanese Americans. Presidents Bush and Obama now must face their own reckoning. Power corrupts, but it is endless war that corrupts absolutely"-- Provided by publisher.

This book went way too far into the conspiracy theory genre for me. While his sources were anonymous they seemed fairly low level. It was hard to tell as well if some of the things he described were one offs or part of a wider pattern. Risen certainly found examples of waste and incompetence - it's hard to know though based on his book if that was the pattern or the exception. My guess is it lies somewhere in the middle.

This exhaustively researched and documented book provokes anger and sadness.
Anger arises from knowing that there really is no government "for the people". Our politicians serve their own narrow interests as well as those of select interest groups. They conduct unconstitutional operations, violate ethical standards and profit enormously at our expense.
Sadness comes from the realization that democracy is being eroded and civil liberties are disappearing in the US (and Canada as well).
Of particular interest is the chapter on how the unique relationship between the border towns of Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead, Quebec has been destroyed by idiotic government agents.
James Risen is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and investigative reporter who has suffered government persecution for simply telling and writing the truth.

This book has some incredible stories to tell about the waste and epic fraud that has occurred in our name as American citizens. Trillions of dollars have been spent on the "War on Terror" and it is going to go down in history as the biggest sham of the early 21st century. The attacks on this country in 2001 have given carte blanche to the politicians and their minions to spend, spend, spend. The political class in this nation is an absolute disaster and this book will or should make your blood boil. What an unbelievable disaster. We should all be ashamed that we allow this to occur.
