Unfortunately this movie (in my opinion) was not entertaining or interesting at all.

Mix bag. The first part was good. The second part was not.

This mini-series was interesting enough but very cheesy. It was amazing to see how Houdini did his magic tricks and the actors - Adrien Brody and Kristen Connolly - were pretty good. I wish that it would have been less dramatic and more realistic.

Very entertaining movie with good acting, camera work and production. Really liked the philosophical aspects of the commentary and lessons one could derive from life of Houdini. A little long but well worth watching and reflecting.

A stylish miniseries that tells the story of the master illusionist, going back and forth in time here and there. Adrien Brody is well cast in the title role, with Kristen Connolly playing his wife, who occasionally finds herself at odds with her husband's obsessions. It plays fast and loose with the facts, but it certainly is entertaining.

I enjoyed it. I had no idea that Houdini knew Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, or that Doyle was into the 'spiritualistic' lifestyle, for that matter... Someone should put out a biopic on him... (are you listening, History Channel?) Anyways, this was far better than the Tony Curtis/Janet Leigh version, anyways... (LOL)

Certainly entertaining, and Brody was a wonderful choice for the lead, but the fact that it was developed as a miniseries for The History Channel means that it couldn't really escape that "Ken Burns Documentary" feel at times. Kristen Conolly as the cliched long-suffering spouse role wasn't given much to work with, alas, which is a shame as she was good on House of Cards.

Surprised at some of the tricks exposed in the film and what a body that Brody had developed for the role. Super cheap tickets for some of the greatest shows ever by magician and escape artist Houdini. Watch the extended version on disc 2 for more magic; and visit this site that revealed tricks performed by Houdini in this film:

I watched the extended version. It was great. Adrian Brody was terrific as Houdini! There awesome "reveals" as to how he did some of his tricks, but it does not detract from what an amazing magician he was. The part he played in espionage was quite interesting.

Accuracy certainly is suspect, but this is an excellent production (the extended version) marred only by being a little too sordid and overdramatic. Adrien Brody is outstanding (if you haven't seen him in "The Pianist" you are truly missing out). Music is good if a little too loud. Gripping and suspenseful...definitely worth seeing.
Best line: " The only way to beat death is to put your life on the line."

Man: I communicate authentically with the beyond ... and I say to your face you are nothing but a trickster.
Houdini: True. I claim no otherworldly powers. On the contrary, I exalt in my own. I've spent a lifetime developing my strength...and mastering physical manipulation. I do not seek to profit from the pain and loss of the bereaved...only to entertain.
Houdini: Thought about being a surgeon.
Surgeon: You? Whatever for?
Houdini: To do something...useful.
Surgeon: Useful? You've thrilled millions. I take my family to see you every time you play Detroit.
Houdini: What you do is real, Doc. I'm a fake.
Surgeon: Is it fake to make people happy? Fake to help millions escape their own problems for a while? Inspire them. I don't think that's fake. I think you're the realest person I ever met.

Houdini: You're the wife Of the great houdini!
Bess: Really? I thought I was just
a woman you put in a trunk (refer to a magic trick she performed in.) And took out when you felt like it.

Houdini: The bullets I pretended to catch in my teeth...now struck young men
throughout the world. The flying machines I loved were now used to kill. By the end of the war, a lot of folks I knew were gone.

Opening scenes:

Can you hear me? One way or another, we all want to escape. When ordinary life shackles us, We need to get away. Get away from boredom. From pain. From fear. But not me. Fear is how I know I'm alive. Unlike other people, I don't escape life. I escape death. Hell of a way to make a living. They say when you're gonna die, Your whole life flashes before your eyes. My name is erich weiss. But no one's called me that in a long time. I can escape from almost anything-- Handcuffs, straightjackets-- you name it. But the one thing I can't seem to escape from...Is me.
