Ian Fleming is a great writer for this genre. His command of the language and imagination make for great story telling and great reads. To comment (negatively) that his work is dated misses the point that these are period pieces. It's a shame that the movies eventually chose to place the stories in contemporary settings, sometimes with disastrous effect. Moonraker for example is one of the very best books but the movie is a farce that has little to do with it.

A thrilling read, and perhaps the most violent of the novels.

However, it is horribly dated in how it treats non-white races. Ian Fleming's dialogue to match African American dialect is at times laughable, other times jaw-dropping, but eternally troubling. His female characters is a whole other discussion entirely...

I can only recommend the book to die-hard Bond fans going through the books. Much like reading the works of H.P. Lovecraft, it's a fun reading experience, but sadly punctuated throughout with garishly horrible, dated, and naive depictions of race relations

This is the second James Bond book he wrote, and it is very good. It's completely different from the movie. Written in 1954, it really has a flavor of the 50s in New York and Jamaica. There are no gimmicks and high tech gadgets and though the villain is a little far-fetched, it really could have happened. There's a lot of stuff in it about aquatic life such as sharks and barracudas. The characterizations are real. I enjoyed it a lot.

Fast-paced with lots of detail. The N-word is used and some of the characters die horrible deaths. Unlike the movies, you get to feel how stressed out Bond gets about events and mission prep.

Culturally-insensitive and dated.

Good, fast action like the movies.
