Lively, colorful, and full of culture! It’s a great book for elementary school children, with a rich story line about learning to play music and the culture of New Orleans.
It was a bit advanced for my almost 2yo, but he enjoyed the pictures and especially counting all the balloons. I’d like to check it out again when he is a bit older.

🎶 I've seen Trombone Shorty perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival, and he's a great trombonist, and a great entertainer, leading his band out into the audience like he was in a New Orleans parade. You couldn't hope to have a better time than hearing this fine artist play.

Excellent book! I think elementary age children would thoroughly enjoy this biography of a young African-American musician growing up in New Orleans. It is an engaging story of a modern jazz musician whose music is easily accessible today.

Troy Andrews grew up in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans where money was sparse but music flowed in the streets. He picked up a discarded trombone when he was very little hoping to join in tune with the many musicians in his family. His brother saw him carrying an instrument larger than he was, and dubbed him Trombone Shorty. Trombone Shorty did join in whenever he could, including a Bo Diddley concert at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and he played so well that the famous musician brought him on stage. This colorful book shares the story of a Grammy nominated musician whose dream came true with a little practice and passion.

You can hear the music of New Orleans coming through the words of this book! It's so fun and the pictures will spark conversations between parent and child. This is a great, creative read aloud book.
