Well, the "Reluctant Midwife" never does come to enjoy midwifing, if that's what you were thinking by the title.

The main character is a nurse in the midst of the Great Depression in a especially depressed area of West Virginia in coal-mining country. She's dragging around her former employer / physician, who has become mentally ill and penniless, trying to find a way for both of them to survive. The story goes on and on, in a sort of 12-year old mentality literary style (why are some many books these days written in a dumbed-down manner?) and eventually the doctor somewhat snaps out of his state. The credibility of the nurse remains questionable -- the author is constantly making her seem squeamish and shocked at the body fluids associated with delivering a baby, as well as making her dwell on the size of a young man's male organ that she meets in her professional capacity -- that you wonder about the author's intent.

Bottom line: funky / weird in a thumbs-down way.

I really got into the story and loved it! I read the first one in the series a few years ago (The Midwife of Hope River), so it was helpful to have background info. on the characters.

a good read, I got a little tired of Becky not really wanting to help the new mothers though. Was she not a nurse? I will read the first book by Patricia Harman as soon as I can because all-in-all a very interesting book. Try it!!
