An almost intrusive look into one of rock n roll most troubled stars. I learned so much more than I ever thought I would, and would ever really like too. But there is no denying that this documentary sums up Kurt Cobain's idylic childhood, painful teenage years and subsequent rise to fame in a very concise way; and the documentary drops off just as Cobain drops out of the picture himself, replacing himself with a suicide obsessed junkie. But the film serves to humanize Cobain, and suceeds there.

If you are looking for a documentary in a conventional form-this is not for you. 'Montage of Heck' is exactly what it says-a montage. This doc. tells the story of Kurt Cobain using interviews, animation, video footage all used randomly throughout.
Cobain is revealed to be a hard worker and much more organized that the grunge slacker rocker that was his image. Early notebooks shows meticulous budgeting and writing and drawing constantly.
His story is a tragedy. He was emotionally wounded by his parent's divorce and spent years going between their homes and different relatives. He was ridiculed at school for a failed sexual advance to a 'slow' woman. Later on when he is famous so touching is the home footage of him playing with his child.
The format requires some patience to get through but the story stays with you.
