Much better than I had expected: with the original cast doing the voices (minus Chekov), music and sound effects from the series, and plots that could have been used during the original run, watching these cartoons is the next best thing to a fourth season of Classic Trek.

Great fun, early 70s continuation of the original Star Trek series. While the original series performers continued their characters for the most part (the producers couldn't afford to hire Walter Koenig to do Chekov), they did use Doohan, and Mrs. Roddenberry to voice guest characters. Notable writers included several original Trek personnel, and some famous science fiction authors such as David Gerrold and Larry Niven. While admittedly a product of 1970s Saturday morning animation powerhouse Filmation, which couldn't animate like Disney, it was a good series and had solid sound effects and a great music soundtrack, including a neat 70s production of the classic Trek theme.

Not being a great fan of the original, live-action Star Trek TV Series from the 1960's, I found that I was neither very excited nor impressed with this animated version of the show from the mid-1970's.

Even though all of the primary characters here were voiced by the original actors from the live-action TV show, I found that the animation was annoyingly flat and uninspired and this, alone, took a considerable amount away from the overall appeal of the entire show.

Obviously this animated series was on a limited budget. And if the production company had dispensed with wasting money on paying actors like William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy big bucks to lend their voices to the show and had used that money instead to create some really awesome animation, then, from my point of view, this series would've probably been a whole lot more entertaining and memorable to watch.

I loved this series! It was great to see Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Nurse Chapel in action again. I especially enjoyed Yesteryear; More Tribbles, More Troubles; Mudd's Passion; and The Counter-Clock Incident. It was fun picking out the different characters Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan and Majel Barrett gave voice to. And it was really neat to see all the wonderful stories the creators and animators were able to bring to life. I just wish this series were longer than two years and only 22 episodes.
