On one level this can be followed as the story of two cops sent to a small town in the rice-growing wetlands of the lower Guadalquivir river to solve the disappearances of young girls. As outsiders they meet plenty of resistance from the locals ('you don't understand how things are done here') but ultimately manage to catch the killer in a cinematographic triumph of a rainstorm. On another level this is a parable about post-Franco Spain. The story is set in 1980, only five years after the dictator died and three years after passage of the 'forgetting' law. Pedro, the taciturn, ambitious Madrileno detective, is committed to the new democratic Spain. Juan (whom the director cleverly makes more likable) is a shrug-your-shoulders unapologetic veteran of Franco's brutal political police who accepts the new order with jaunty cynicism. Their uneasy partnership in pursuit of the deranged perp represents the relationship between the Spanish present and the past, a relationship that is left nicely unresolved in the film's final dialogue. Good cinematography, acting and directing.

Stunning visuals complement a standout film. Gripping moments of tension press two mismatched detectives at odds in both temperament and background. They struggle to find meeting ground. Wild marshland and beautiful vistas serve as a backdrop to brutal crimes and hidden horrors.

This is a detective story with a twist from Spanish. First, it is not a contemporary story as the backdrop is 1980 Spain in the post-Franco era. Second, the two detectives working on the serial killings case are basically odd couples. But overall, it is an engaging watch. Subtitles.

While you watch this movie, first thing that comes to mind is, "I have seen this plot somewhere...." True detective tv series....The question is, who came up with idea first?😀 Nevertheless, this movie is dark crime drama, beautifully shot through northern parts of Spain, where very strange looking marshlands exist and very tragic events take the place. Two, different policemen are trying to solve the crime.....Ending was weak, but movie over all was very satisfactory.

A good detective story, with a good commentary on Franco's Spain.

Really enjoyed this moody story. Reminded us of True Detective in tone and visuals but wrapped up in one movie.

Hardboiled Spanish mystery thriller, missed it at SIFF last year, so glad for the chance to see it after all. Lots of spooky smalltown situations & people putting each other in chokeholds, but the acting is excellent, the photography is out of this world...five underage stars looking for work in the big city!
