I loved that this book took place in Portugal, a place I've never been to and don't know much about. I definitely felt that the setting was very real. I liked the main characters, although Joanna annoyed me in the end. I don't usually read mysteries, but I read this book in two days and couldn't put it down. There are two parts to this story - the present day, Faro, 2014, and the past, Lisbon (and later, Faro) during and after World War II. It was interesting to read a blend of historical and contemporary fiction. I recommend this for anyone who wants to read about a sunny place, and who likes a bit of mystery alongside historical fiction.

A wonderful historical/mystery/romance read that alternated seamlessly between present day and WWII. I really enjoyed the fact that the author used chapters of a fictional novel when retelling the part of the story that took place in the past. The beautiful setting was so vividly described that I could imagine myself being in Portugal, and I loved the hint of Gothic strewn throughout the book. I look forward to reading more by this author.
