Set in the often starkly beautiful Badlands of South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. With an older brother in jail and living with their single mother on Pine Ridge Reservation, Johnny and his sister Jashuan's lives develop new challenges when their absentee cowboy father suddenly dies. The loss prompts Johnny to strike out for Los Angeles, but would mean leaving behind his beloved sister. Most of the key players are young Lakota Native Americans.

If you want to train a horse, you have to respect your freedom. If you ride it constantly, we risk breaking his mind. All wild animals have something bad in them. They have to keep it. They need it to survive here.

Why do you like the number 7?
-For far too many reasons, too much. 7 is the most important figure and the most used in the Bible. And it's the most sacred and revered of our culture. Crazy Horse said that everything seems stopped at Wounded Knee. But that everything will start again with the seventh generation. Yours.

When he is born, I was so happy. He was an adorable baby, I'll take care of him and everything would be fine. But after a while, it has become difficult. He told me he would prefer to be in prison than at home. I do not blame him.

There was a girl who smiled at him and loved his style. It was Thecla. And even if he has 25 children and 9 women, it was with her that he married.

It's like that since 1930, the reserve has not changed. It was called "334 prison camp" before it becomes Pine Ridge.

What do you want to do when you are older ?
-I dunno.
Think a little.
-Boxer.
You want to store things in a box? To be a storekeeper? Work in a box? That's it?
-No.
What do you want to do, then?
- be a boxer.
Okay ! You want to be pugilist. Do you know that word? Aurelia? What business would you like to do?
--Lawyer.
Fantastic ! We had fun in high school. But now you are adults. We must think about the future. ... Become a lawyer? It is commendable. But you have to go there seriously.

I thank you, Lord, for giving me so much. You made me free and I do not miss anything. I am not the slave of the whistle, clock, or bell. Make me the companion of wind and sun, I will not ask a light or noble life. Let me go through the plains, loyal as the horse on which I am, free as the wind who roars in the rain.

Dad was never here, even if I lived at home. My mother was not there either. They loved the road, they traveled all the time. I do not remember
when I started. I think I really wanted get closer to them and the only way,
it was to ride on a bull.

I am born left (left handed.) The nuns did not like that. They forced me to be right. It's a sign of Evil. I had trouble learning To lace up my shoes. The day I finally got it, I was so happy. I ran home. "Mom, I know how to make my laces!" She smelled beer ... she looked at me and ... That's when I understood I should take care of my little sister. That I would be the adult. I do not want that for you. Not at all.

Where we live ... The plains, the arid landscapes. Everything is alike. People are all parents. They always have the same worries. Sometimes it's very hard. We're fed up, but we keep going, do what you have to do. It's hard to leave here. Because we knew that. My sister, Jashaun, loves this place. She sees things that I do not see. She's a beautiful person. When a storm approaches, the elders teach us to observe the clouds. And when the wind is too strong, we know how to lean with him, so that he does not take us away.

Agreed with ms_mustard's comment, but I needed to turn on the Captions for some of the dialogues. Prequel of director Chloe Zhao's "The Rider 2018." Both films are about life of real local residents, many as cast members, on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. This one is about a Lakota Sioux high school graduate's family and his next choice in life: to explore the world beyond the arid plains or stay behind in a place called home.

realistic portrayal of life on a Lakota reservation - looks like a doc, but isn't

I found most of the dialogue impossible to understand, and wished for the SDH, but was still able to follow the story line.
