As a member of "the band" from 6th grade through my senior year at IU, this one, of course, hit a nerve with me.

Bonus points for an excellent soundtrack!

This movie brought me to tears. When you realize Mr. Holland gives up his dream of writing a symphony only to find a new dream, that really put the concept of "adulting" into perspective.

This is a very long drawn out soap opera of a movie, that tries to cram in as much melodrama as possible. It gets very tedious and you want it to be over soon. It is all very predictable, the story has no surprises, but the acting saves it from monotony. I watched it as it was a must see, but I would not do so again.

I related to this movie very differently as a teenager and an adult. I really hated it as a teenager because I couldn't understand the anger Richard Dreyfuss felt and didn't like the way he treated his family. Now, I can understand why people find it touching: he was someone who was frustrated by sidelining his dream and having his life go in an unexpected direction, but he made the best of it eventually.

I enjoyed the movie and though I found the father to be absent leaving all the work to the mom when he found out the problem his son had he made up for it in the end, unfortunately by that time his son was already a grown man. Although the movie was about a man who composed music and wondered if it really mattered to others, one has to watch it to realize that the scope that mattered was there in his family.
