Comment
Add a CommentEleanor Davis’ graphic memoir of her bicycle tour from Arizona to Georgia is camping under bridges and in culverts. It is meeting strangers and making them your people. It is honest, true and real. It takes life down to the basics, one pedal stroke, after another. Aching knees, fear, self-doubt and depression all make an appearance, but things somehow feel better when Eleanor is bicycling. Border Patrol is a looming presence throughout the journey. Davis witnesses a young man who drives his car into a canal with Border Patrol deputies following closely behind attempting to capture the man with their lasso. There is a full spectrum of emotional highs and lows. And while I did not cry, I promptly requested all of Eleanor Davis’ other titles!
Beautiful Solitary Wonder!!!!
Honest, emotional and real. You feel the author's excitement and her love of adventure, and also feel the hurt and fear she experiences in her journey. Raw and gritty, it gives an insight in to the author's struggle- with the physical tolls of her bike trip and of her internal hardships.
The art style is quirky, and unpolished in the cutest way.
It's a different sort of memoir that's simply drawn but that's alright as it's a sparse story if cycling solo. The tone suits the story well.
Simple pencil drawings, and matter of fact spare prose, describe the author's bike trip.
Makes me want to finally do that long bike trip I have been thinking about for years. This book is funny, informative, real, tear jerking at points and really take you along on the adventure.
I have always wanted to take a long bike trip, but have always found excuses not to do it. I love Eleanor's story, that she tried, she fretted, and she stopped when she needed to stop. I'm going to use her as an example of trying things that might seem scary and succeeding!
