Superb little book. Excellent translation by Jumpha Lahiri, Pulitzer Prize winner. Devastating take on family life. Intro by Lahiri is also brilliant and must be read.

What a fabulously written story - a story that could be any family of four living the progression of years with the push and pull of the nuclear dynamics. The metaphor of ties is real, as in shoelaces, and in familial ties, ties to one's desires, ties to one's past. Simple narrative with deep, flowing meaning.
