I've now seen three adaptations of Collins's novel. This is probably the weakest, for the simple reason that it is too short. If the producer did not want to make a multi-part series, he should have cancelled the project. Too many times during the two hour running time we see a scene skimped over--one example is Marian's attempt to filch papers from Fosco's room. Tara Fitzgerald has no time to establish the importance of the action before it's over and a new scene must start. If you go to YouTube, you can find the 1982 version with Diana Quick as Marian and Alan Badel as Fosco; they're both terrific. And there's much more of Ian Richardson too.

News flash: Twenty-first century sensibilities do align with Victorian sensibilities! In one respect anyway: Lord Glyde's crime is still horrifying! Sadly, it seems to be more common, today.

The film, however, is rather ho-hum. Atmospheric, yes, but it kind of drags on.

This was not a great production. The acting was good, the costumes and settings fine, but there's something not-working in the adaptation itself. It's not particularly entertaining, compelling, or engaging. Pass.

Interesting period drama. I did a lot of fast forwarding with this dvd. It was okay.

The acting was first rate and the villain was the most intriguing of any I've ever encountered. And this from someone who has read almost all of Dickens' novels. Very edge of seat suspense-Hitch himself would be impressed, but then I have always enjoyed Masterpiece Theater. Another Masterpiece Theater favorite with a great villain is Clarissa.

A decent effort to turn this great classic into a movie but if you haven't read the book, you might have difficulty tracking all the twists of turns of this mystery thriller.

surprisingly good movie. Both women were very attractive. And I was glad to see both had survived the ordeal.
