Reminiscent of Little Women, but with the misadventures of Anne of Green Gables, the Penderwicks are a loveable set of sisters. The story has an old fashioned feel set in more modern times.

I read this with my son (12 years old) and our neighbor (11 year old girl) as part of our summer book club. We really loved it! My son is a lot like Jeffrey (an only child who loves music) and our neighbor is the oldest of 4 children, like the Penderwicks! Each chapter left us wanting to read more. At the end, they were very eager to give it 5 stars and shouted, "It was the best book ever!"

Such a great comfortable book, the perfect kind to read in the dreary winter to cheer up your day! I’ve already read this book at least four times, and I’m still looking forward to reading it again. The perfect family, the perfect book, the perfect story.

The series is a fantastic series for any lover of realistic fiction and some mild hi-jinks and adventure. You will fall in love with the four Penderwick sisters.

When the four Penderwick sisters find themselves on the beautiful Arundel estate for their summer vacation, they are excited to explore the sprawling grounds. Jeffrey, the owner's son, is the perfect partner for their adventures. However, Jeffrey's mother is not very fond of the girls, and lots of trouble ensues. Growing up, some of Birdsall's favorite books were Little Women and The Secret Garden, and she wrote the award winning Penderwicks in the same spirit.

Four sisters on vacation with their absent-minded, widowed father, experience friendship, and maybe even a taste of First Love.
