I have to comment on this book: If you are interested in early Christianity, European history, philosophy, and the spiritual/moral development of man, this book is for you. It is so well written that even a fiction reader like myself was drawn to it. Much of the growth of Christianity is tied to simultaneous world events and author Massing has patiently and clearly outlined the confluence of historical occurrences that together comprise the advance(?) of western civilization. One of my big takeaways was how (and why) biblical translation and interpretation were so critical to the development of society and personal belief. That adherence to belief in a man whose sole doctrine was "Love the Lord your God above all others and love your neighbor as yourself" should result in widespread destruction, death, and wars is sickening. Anyway, this book provided a comprehensive chronicle of the evolution of Catholicism, Reformation, and European history. I truly enjoyed it.
