It's entirely possible that you have to have read the book to enjoy this two-part movie. The screenplay does its best to stay very true to the book, and it was wonderful to see Eartha Kitt as Lola Dede and Jennifer Beals as Dolly Rose, and Jasmine Guy's Juliet Mercier was inspired; but I think you have to already know all these characters well to be able to keep their stories and interconnections straight while you watch. I liked it very much, but if you haven't read the book, I'd say you should do that before seeing the movie.
