Lady Everleigh's lack of magical ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Forced into hiding with a gladiator troupe, she meets Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. As Vasilia pushes Bellona to the brink of war, Evie must become a gladiator herself... and kill the queen. -- adapted from publisher info

First time that I've tried this author and found the book excellent. Good plot, good character development, satisfying ending with more to come, Was happy that the ending was not a cliff hanger,

Review excerpt: "'Kill the Queen' by Jennifer Estep is the first book in a fantasy series that features a badass female gladiator on a quest to reclaim the throne from her murderous cousin. It’s tremendous fun, although it wraps up quickly."

A good read, fast paced plot and interesting characters. I found myself really enjoying the journey of the main character.

It has all the elements of a good fantasy, plus some great fight and dance scenes, but the action at times felt a bit....rushed? not enough at stake? I don't know. I am sure with further outings in this realm, more will be revealed.

This is the first of Estep's books that I've read & I'm hooked! Intrigue, assassins, killing, killing & more killing - this is not a book for the feint of heart. If this type of story appeals to you, the author has written a book you won't want to put down.
