If someone asked me what the worst book I ever read was, it would absolutely be a 'Bel Canto'.
I found it super hard to get through the book, so I thought I'd give the video a chance for a reprieve. But after looking through the comments sounds like it's just more of the same blah

I guess I won't read the book after all. The way the hostages play out their captivity by Shining Path guerrillas is ludicrous. I'm a music lover, but even I don't believe in the power ascribed to music in this story.

Nothing special, a bit entertaing, and a very different ending. We took the time to finish it and glad we did. Is it one you can miss, yea it is. But if you like movies take the risk.

Great production qualities, & acting. The question I have tho' is, do the captors lose sight of their purpose, or do they not have a strong enough purpose from the get-go? I did not really buy the story. It is possible to connect with the person(s) who hold you hostage & relate to them. It is hard for me to imagine anyone who is held hostage to not be thinking of an escape 100% of the time. I would be. The relationships created by the hostages themselves are well done, but not realistic in this environment. Without them the film would be nothing.

I loved Patchett's novel when I read it many years ago - swept away by her writing and the story
I enjoyed the movie but my heart still goes with the book, which in my memory is more powerful and had a much greater impact on me

A fabulous thriller set to entertain!

Yes, a poor job of lip syncing & I felt an altogether poor job by Moore. Yes, a bit improbable; spend some time with 'some others' & there's bound to be common ground...oh, that's way too broad a statement. I didn't care for the book, the audiobook & not much better feeling with the DVD. At least i really tried. Not a great fan of the author, despite fan base & admiration. I think much of this goes in my left ear & out my right - plus, I just didn't 'get' the ending. What I did like? The fact that the poor common folk always get shafted by the elite, those that have clawed, cheated & faked their way to the top. See The Year of Living Dangerously about Sukarno a example. Love Ken Watanabe :) Should have stuck with Animal Planet that night.

“It's overripe and improbable, but you'd need a flinty heart to resist the message of solidarity, that if you spend time with someone, anyone, you'll find common ground.”

“No one loves or dies without purpose in this searing film.”

“It's the world-famous soprano Renée Fleming, and Moore is lip-syncing. And the effect is horrific.”

I copied these from other reviewers because they said what I couldn't think how to express.

Ridiculous premise.

Probably THE BEST film that no one has ever heard of. Shame. Moving story, fantastic performances from the actors, beautiful opera contrasted against terrorism and violence. Highly recommended!
