Germany, 1943. Rosa Sauer's parents are gone, and her husband Gregor is fighting on the front lines of WWII. Conscripted by the SS to be one of Hitler's tasters, three times a day she and nine other women go to his secret headquarters, the Wolf's Lair, to eat his meals before he does. Three times a day. Forced to eat what might kill them, the tasters begin to divide into The Fanatics, loyal to Hitler, and those who insist they aren't Nazis, even as they risk their lives every day for Hitler's. And as the months pass, it becomes increasingly clear they are on the wrong side of history. -- Adapted from jacket.

My wife actually read this book, her words...Well, the author grabbed my attention for sure, but then after a 3rd way in, the whole story line went on a sideroad. I know that what she wrote happened as I had read in nonfiction periodicals they did throughout Europe at the time, but still. The authored wrote in the vein of hopelessness, and at the end one was left sad.
