When Tony Lip, a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on a book to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger, as well as unexpected humanity and humor, they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

History filmed through a white man's lenses.

The concept of two people form totally different backgrounds and life experiences is nothing new. Still, the acting is just fine.

Disappointed that the character of Estonian cellist Jüri Täht was changed to Russian for this movie. You would have to have absolutely no knowledge of that region's history to change the ethnicity of a character from Estonian to Russian.

Didn't deserve the Oscar.

At first I thought this was going to be another generic "white savior" film in the vein of The Blind Side, but no it was a brilliant film that didn't focus on race relations but instead on an unlikely real-life friendship.

Great chemistry between Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali!

I was reluctant to get this movie as I was not eager to watch something with graphic hate and an intense message. I was happily surprised by a well told tale based on a true story which was more subtle than violent. A super story and incredibly played.

Simply delightful, expertly steered by its director. Enjoy the stellar performances by Viggo Mortensen & Mahershala Ali. My humble advise for 130 minutes while watching this movie; suspend all angst about the dark history of racial tension in America’s Deep South

Indeed about discrimination in all aspects of relationships. Great actors and writer.
Not necessarily fun.

This movie deserves every award it receives and then some. Enchanting performances by the two main characters.

Tony Lip: You know, when you first hired me, my wife went out and bought one of your records. The one about the orphans?

Dr. Don Shirley: Orphans?

Tony Lip: Yeah. Cover had a bunch of kids sittin' around a campfire?

Dr. Don Shirley: Orpheus.

Tony Lip: ...Yeah.

Dr. Don Shirley: Orpheus in the Underworld. It's based on a French opera. And those weren't children on the cover, those were demons in the bowels of Hell.

Tony Lip: No shxt! They must've been naughty kids!
