A cute and adorable romance between a teenage witch, Nova Huang, and a werewolf, Tam Lang. A lighthearted and wholesome magical tale of teenage love battling it out against the forces of evil you don't want to miss.

Mooncakes is about Nova Huang, a teen witch working at her grandmother's bookshop helping to loan out spell books and investigating anything supernatural in and around their town. One night she goes into the woods to investigate sightings of a white wolf. She ends up running into someone she least expects: Tam Lang, a werewolf and her childhood crush! After battling a horse demon, the duo go back to Nova's grandmother's for help. As their feelings are rekindled, Nova and Tam use witchcraft, magic, occult rituals, and family in their journey of self-discovery.

I never knew I needed a graphic novel where one of the main characters is a queer, hard-of-hearing witch who has a relationship with a nonbinary werewolf, but along came Mooncakes and I couldn't be more happy. I absolutely loved everything about this book - the representation; both main characters are Chinese-American, the amount of LGBTQ+ characters, the references to Nova's hearing aids! Tam uses they/them pronouns and as soon as one of Nova's grandma's learns about it, she apologizes, corrects herself, and then uses them. Everything about this novel is precious, wholesome, and delightful.

The artwork in the graphic novel was clear and amazing. The color scheme of everything made me crave fall. I could feel the cool breeze through the panels and everyone's outfits always looked so cozy!

Mooncakes is an adorable graphic novel, filled with a sprinkle of magic, great representation, and cute art. It won't disappoint!

Gorgeous illustrations paired with an adorable story about a non-binary werewolf and a witch falling in love. Honestly, what more could you want? I read this all in one sitting and I was definitely not disappointed.

Queerness, magic, and werewolves, oh my!

What I enjoyed about this #GraphicNovel is that we're introduced to a non-binary werewolf, Tam, and an LGBTQ+ witch, Nova. They were once close, but Tam moved away some time ago. When they return, Tam and Nova rekindle an early romance.

It's a sweet love story about acceptance, magic, and overcoming obstacles.

3 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy ya graphic novels.

Nova works in her grandmother's bookshop, and is a witch. When she sees a white wolf in the woods one night she realizes it is her childhood crush Tam. Tam is battling a horse demon, and soon Nova, Tam, and the nanas will find themselves trying to save the town from the horse demon.

I had seen people reading this and decided to give this a shot in between books. The illustrations were so cute (especially the cats and forest creatures), and I enjoyed the story, though it ultimately felt a bit too teenagery for me. It was a cute, witchy graphic novel with lots of representation from ability to sexuality. I loved the nanas and the family dynamic. The family dynamic with her parents, etc. wasn't explained at all which was kind of confusing... I wish there would have been more there. I loved the holiday aspect, the whole story was very cozy. There was not a lot of back story on their Nova and Tam's relationship, I wish that there would have been more flashbacks. Without them it felt a bit instant. I enjoyed the puns thrown in. The magic system wasn't particularly explained and I don't think I really "got" the spell that they did for connection or why it continued the way it did as the story went on. Lastly, as a foodie and someone who loves food in books, I wish that we would have heard more about the actual mooncakes. They are mentioned in passing once, and that was all we got. Overall this was cute, with great representation, but ultimately too teenagery I think, for me.

This is a very cute story, part coming of age and part romance between a young witch and werewolf. The diverse cast is delightful, especially the two grandmas and it was a perfect feel good story for a rough year. It might not appeal as much to anyone who wants more depth in the magic or world building as the focus is clearly on the characters. The art is also super cute, a great match for the tone of the writing.

A lovely story that I found just a bit too breezy and insubstantial to love.

A magical, romantic adventure following two teenage girls, a witch & a werewolf, as they battle the the forces of evil and discover love along the way. I absolutely adored this graphic novel! You can feel the joy that the creators had for this story in every panel, and I can’t wait to see what stories they conjure up next.

While thoroughly enjoyable for it's diverse cast, homey setting, and succinct story, I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed when I finished reading Mooncakes. It left me wanting more out it. The illustrations offer some nice details and some of the "extra" content in the back also fleshes things out a little but little details about this interpretation of magic might have grounded the magical aspects of the otherwise down-to-earth romance.
