Sharia also defines the main duties and responsibilities of the caliph. the following are three among many of the caliph's responsibilities: 1. To safeguard Islam in its original form, and to protect against the introduction of new things (bid'a) into Islam. 2. To defend the rights of Muslims abroad, and to see to it that Islam can spread freely in non-Muslim lands (including the use of force). 3. To organize jihad against any non-Muslim government that prevents Muslim "dawa" (proselytizers) from entering its land.
