For the most part pretty terrible acting. The story is highly fragmented and doesn't really hang together unless you have read the book. Even then there's been enough changes in the movie version that it really, really doesn't hang together and the changes are adding insult to injury. It's not even like the special effects are all that great. This is the kind of story that's just asking for a three movie remake along the lines of The Hobbit, and like The Hobbit you don't mention the a first movie version ever existed. I guess the only good things I can say are there are a few actors who somehow emerged unscathed and went on to become famous in other ventures (e.g., Patrick Stewart). You can also add this to the list of steampunk movies in terms of set and prop design, but it's not worth watching for that.
