Bipolar Disorder
Mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, are a leading cause of disability. According to the National Institute of Mental Health about 4% of the adult population in the United States will experience bipolar disorder in their lives. July is Disability Pride Month. Disability pride doesn’t mean that disabilities are fun. Disability Pride fights the stereotype that people with disabilities are worth less than fully abled people, that they have less to contribute, and that they should be ashamed of their disability. As someone with a mental illness, I believe it is incredibly important to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and part of that is to talk about them as serious medical conditions that can result in reduced quality of life, disability, and even death.
