VPL - Literary Lesbian Reads
A survey of lesbian literary fiction. While the genre can be traced back to the Greek poet Sappho on the Island of Lesbos in 630 BCE, it is only in the last century that lesbian literature has gained popularity. Lesbian literature tends to suffer from the issue of definition - what makes a work "lesbian?" A lesbian author, lesbian subject matter, lesbian characters, a predilection towards romantic lesbian love? Some critics even argue against its existence, citing that any book with a romance arc or a female protagonist could easily be considered "lesbian" without changing the genre. Despite its contradictions and nuances, this is an important cannon of literature, with its own seminal works, subgenres, history and tropes. Comprising of multiple subgenres and distinct styles, these titles tend to place emphasis on character, tone, and atmosphere rather than plot, and are often concerned with larger philosophical ideas and themes. While by no means comprehensive, this list provides both Western works as well as novels in translation.
